Great news for the hindered nature center at Cowan Elementary School! The Los Angeles Unified School District, with huge support from Marlene Canter, has taken the nature center under its wing after years of stalling. The district has hired talented, visionary landscape architect John Donan from BDA Landscape Architects, who was able to figure out how to get rid of all the concrete and iron and create a truly natural habit for our students and community to learn. This new plan and initial grading work will be paid for by LAUSD through Marlene Canter and Maintenance and Operations. The new plans for the outdoor classroom are expected to be completed by June 1st, with a preview at our annual Concert by the Canyon on Sunday, May 18th.
Why has the outdoor classroom been stalled for two years? As explained previously, the CowaNatureCenter ran into major problems due to record rains, erosion, and lack of inspections from the district and construction issues.
“I am thrilled LAUSD is truly partnering with our school to bring this nature center to fruition. My dream is to have our outdoor classroom utilized by all the students in the Westchester Family of Schools (FOS). This is an amazing acre of canyon land with great opportunities to teach our children about the environment, science, and the appreciation of nature,” said Sheri Weitz, Cowan parent and founder of the CowaNatureCenter.
Drew Furedi, executive director of the LMU FOS, has also expressed support and LMU has begun researching appropriate grants. Once construction re-commences and the new plans are complete, the parents at Cowan will be seeking donations and volunteer help for the outdoor classroom. “We will need a great deal of help when the time is right, so volunteers are very much appreciated,” said Sheri Weitz.
So hang in there, Westchester! The CowaNatureCenter will become a reality in due time, and your patience and support are appreciated. Look for more information on the new landscape plans soon.
